Ipe Aftercare Kit

If you want to preserve the original color...

Ipé is naturally a uniform brown color. Keep in mind that the original color of all woods will gray out with time when placed outdoors and exposed to ultra violet rays (UV). This is a function of UV light bleaching the wood over time.

If you want to preserve the original color of our Ipé, we recommend using the Ipé Aftercare Kit.

This 2-step kit contains a packet of Penofin Pro-Tech Brightener and a quart can of Penofin Verde Oil Finish (this is enough finish to cover approximate 60-120 square feet of wood surface, or the equivalent of 1-2 Amber Beechworth sets).  BEWARE TO DISPOSE OF OILY RAGS PROPERY To avoid spontaneous combustion follow rag disposal instructions on back of bottle.

The kit is intended for furniture that has been slightly grayed-out in the weather, and will effectively treat the wood surface and restore the original color.

Please note: the Ipé Aftercare Kit should only be used after the original finish begins to lighten in color (after approximately 2-3 months of outdoor exposure depending on your local weather conditions).

Ipé Cleaner

If your furniture has completely grayed out...

If you have allowed your furniture to completely gray out, or if the wood surface has become heavily stained with water spots or food stains, it is recommended that you also clean the wood surface with Ipé Cleaner. First apply Ipé Cleaner, then rinse with clean water and allow to completely dry. Finally apply Penofin Verde to return and preserve the brown color.

Use of Outdoor Furniture Nail Glides

Hardwood furniture can stain light colored outdoor surfaces. The staining can come from oil and minerals in the wood or from finish products used on the furniture that may have not totally dried. To avoid staining Jensen Leisure Furniture recommends using glides. Majority of legs on the furniture have drilled holes to receive the nail glides. Home stores have products available to clean outdoor surfaces.

Wood Shield

If you want to prevent food stains on tables...

Wood Shield applied to the finished table tops provides a full year protection from household food stains - wine, olive oil, grease stains, water spotting, etc.

Ipe Restoration Kit

For the restoration of Ipe when Ipe Protector has been applied...

The Ipe Restoration Kit is intended for furniture that has been grayed-out in the weather, and will effectively remove water spots and food stains and multiple layers of Ipe Protector finishes down to the bare wood.

Penofin Verde

For the restoration of Ipe when Ipe Protector has been applied...

Applying Penofin Verde will return your Ipe furniture to its original condition. Penofin Verde can only be applied after using the Ipe Restoration Kit.

The No Maintenance Weathered Look

Jensen Ipé furniture can be left outside all year long —in any conditions, and remain functional for years to come with no maintenance whatsoever (cushions should be kept indoors during inclement weather).

However, wood is a natural material subject to changes in the environment. The look and feel of natural wood is part of the appeal of owning wood garden furniture. Although Ipé is naturally stable, small checks in the wood surface may appear if the furniture is placed in dry or sunny environments. Superficial checking in no way affects the structural integrity and longevity of your furniture. In full sun, Ipé will naturally-weather to a grayish-silver color.

In some cases the natural resins contained in the Ipe wood, might stain light colored surfaces (composite decking, vinyl, linoleum, carpets etc). Jensen Leisure Furniture recommends the use of furniture glides to minimize the risk of staining.

Argento Care & Maintenance

The Argento finish was designed to be “low maintenance”, meaning that the finish is designed to continue to gray-out as it weathers, closely approximating the original gray appearance needing no maintenance whatsoever.

If however, the wood surface becomes dirty or stained with outdoor use, here are some recommendations for returning the finish to a clean gray condition using the Argento Aftercare product. Please note that the Argento Aftercare will not restore the original gray finish color. To restore the original gray finish color on sanded or bare Roble wood please use the Argento Touchup Kit.

For complete Argento care and maintenance instructions, please view the Argento Care and Maintenance pdf.

Argento Touch-Up Kit

For touch-up of scratches and marks on Argento finish...

For repairing scratches or rub marks to the Argento finish which may have exposed the natural Roble wood color below the finish, we recommend the use of the Argento Touch-Up Kit to return the original finish.

WEAVE CARE

Cleans easily: Apply lukewarm water and mild, non-foaming soap with a soft cloth or sponge. Brush the furniture clean with a soft pad and rinse the furniture with clean water. Cleaning is recommended at least once a year.

About Jensen Leisure

Jensen Leisure Furniture produces heirloom furniture that will be handed down through generations. Our specifications ensure that your furniture will endure the extremities of nature and repeated sittings throughout a lifetime of reading, dining, and gardenside solitude. Longevity begins with the quality of our timber.

The Ipe timber that goes into Jensen Leisure Furniture is certified by Rainforest Alliance as 100% FSC® Pure. Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) certification is the global "gold standard" in independent, third-party forest certification. It guarantees that the wood contained in our furniture comes from well-managed forests. The FSC logo and "Chain of Custody" number branded on Jensen products allows you to track the wood back to the forest where it originated.

Our Ipe timber comes from the Chiquitania tropical dry forests of Bolivia. Because of the nature of these forests, trees grow very slowly, producing some of the world's strongest and most durable timber species. Our trees are allowed to grow to over 100 years old before being carefully harvested.

Jensen Leisure Furniture is made of 100% heartwood. The heartwood portion of a log is the most dimensionally stable and is only found in slow-growing, century old trees. The exclusive use of heartwood in outdoor furniture is critical for maintaining the long-term strength and integrity of the mortise and tenon joinery throughout the seasonal extremities of freeze and thaw, and extended wet and dry periods.

Another key factor determining how a wood will behave in the out-of-doors, is the degree of care taken when drying the wood. All our wood is carefully kiln dried for periods ranging from four to eight weeks to reduce the moisture content from 50% to 12%. This slow drying and conditioning process also relaxes the natural tensions in the wood to assure years of outdoor use in a wide range of climates.

Jensen Leisure Furniture is designed with heavy dimensioned components for greater strength and stability. Our designers combine innovation, engineering, and craftsmanship to create new and enduring classic designs. As an added security, each piece of Jensen Leisure Furniture has been laboratory-tested to the demanding specifications of contract or commercial applications. Contract specifications far exceed the standards for common residential use.

Jensen furniture is crafted using traditional interlocking mortise and tenon, and dowelled joinery that form rock solid connections. Engineered to extremely tight tolerances through CNC technology, the individual furniture components are permanently attached with snug, moisture-sealed joints. This level of craftsmanship prevents problems such as wobbling, making the furniture safe and stable during a lifetime of use.

The glass hand finish of Jensen furniture is possible due to the dense nature of Ipe wood and our unique cross-grain sanding technique. Sanding cross-grain prevents the lifting of surface micro-fibers and preserves a smooth feel as the wood weathers out-of-doors.

After a completed bench or table has been sanded and had its oil finish applied, it is test-assembled and receives a thorough final inspection to ensure that each item meets our rigorous quality specifications.

About Our Timber - Ipé

The background of Ipé

With over five million acres (twice the size of Yellowstone National Park) of FSC® certified forest under management, Bolivia is the world's leader in sustainable management of natural tropical forest. CIMAL/IMR, the manufacturer of the entire Jensen Leisure Furniture Ipé collection, is directly responsible for the management of approximately half of this area.

The Chiquitania Forest Reserve - Jensen Ipé comes from the 2,120,000 acre CIMAL/IMR Chiquitania forest reserve in Eastern Bolivia. The Chiquitania reserve is a unique formation of natural tropical dry forest. It is located in the southwest corner of the Amazon basin, lying directly west of the Brazilian Pantanal, the world’s largest continguous wetland. The Chiquitania Forest provides critical habitat for many rare and endangered animals, including the Harpy Eagle, Jaguar, the Howler Monkey, and numerous species of neotropical migratory birds.

Because of the nature of tropical dry forest, trees here grow very slowly. Consequently, some of the world's strongest and most durable woods come from the Chiquitania Forest. Ipé (also know as Tajibo in Bolivia), is among the most abundant tree species in these forests.

A strikingly beautiful brown color, Jensen Ipé weathers with strength and elegance.

CIMAL/IMR foresters carefully manage the Ipé in their forest reserves according to the demanding criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council™. Tree harvesting is planned to minimize impacts and preserve the forest’s natural biological diversity.

Ipé is incredibly strong and dense, with very high wear durability. A handsome chocolate-brown when new, the sun gracefully transforms Ipé to a mature, elegant silver patina.

One fantastic example of the durability of these timbers are the Ipé posts and beams found in the original Jesuit missions in Chiquitania dating from the 18th century. After more than 200 years in service these structural members are still sound.

Other applications where the strength and durability of Ipé has been long recognized are in the deck boards of the historic Solferino Footbridge which crosses the Seine River in central Paris, in the famous boardwalk at Atlantic City, NJ, and in the wood slats in all of New York City park benches.
